Can cats eat rice?

Ask your vet about your own pet. This page is general information from the sources below.

Rice is only for small amounts, or in certain forms, for cats. VCA's bland diet page covers dogs and cats and says the same: rice with boiled chicken is an old short-term plan that lacks needed nutrients. Ask a vet before using it. Only if a vet suggests it, plain and cooked.

Small amountsOnly a little, and only the way described below.

Why

VCA's bland diet page covers dogs and cats and says the same: rice with boiled chicken is an old short-term plan that lacks needed nutrients. Ask a vet before using it.

How to serve it

Only if a vet suggests it, plain and cooked.

Good to know

Rice is mostly known as part of a vet-guided upset-stomach diet, and VCA says that home mix is missing many nutrients, so it can't be a regular meal.

Watch for: Fried rice and seasoned rice often contain onion or garlic.

Already ate it?

If your pet ate a lot, or you are worried, call your vet. Say what was eaten, how much and when, and have your pet's weight ready.

For the children

"Rice is only a tiny treat for cats, and only a grown-up decides how much."

A job: Be the label reader. Before a grown-up shares any food with the cat, check this page, and ask a grown-up if the food is not on it.
