Can dogs eat tea?

Ask your vet about your own pet. This page is general information from the sources below.

Tea is only for small amounts, or in certain forms, for dogs. Tea has caffeine. Pet Poison Helpline says one or two licks of tea is unlikely to poison most pets, and VCA says a sip of iced tea probably will not hurt most pets. The risk is caffeine, and the tea bag itself is the bigger worry than a lick from a cup.

Small amountsOnly a little, and only the way described below.

Why

Tea has caffeine. Pet Poison Helpline says one or two licks of tea is unlikely to poison most pets, and VCA says a sip of iced tea probably will not hurt most pets. Tea bags are much riskier and can cause caffeine poisoning, so keep them away and call a vet or poison line if a pet eats one.

Good to know

The risk is caffeine, and the tea bag itself is the bigger worry than a lick from a cup.

Watch for: Iced tea and soda also carry caffeine, and some supplements and energy products do too.

Already ate it?

If your pet ate a lot, or you are worried, call your vet. Say what was eaten, how much and when, and have your pet's weight ready.

For the children

"Tea is only a tiny treat for dogs, and only a grown-up decides how much."

A job: Be the label reader. Before a grown-up shares any food with the dog, check this page, and ask a grown-up if the food is not on it.
