Can dogs eat peanut butter?
Ask your vet about your own pet. This page is general information from the sources below.
Peanut butter is only for small amounts, or in certain forms, for dogs. VCA says natural peanut butter can be a tasty treat for dogs and it has protein and other nutrients. The big warning is xylitol, a sweetener some peanut butters contain that is toxic to dogs. A dog that eats a peanut butter with xylitol needs a vet or poison line right away.

Why
VCA says natural peanut butter can be a tasty treat for dogs and it has protein and other nutrients. The big warning is xylitol, a sweetener some peanut butters contain that is toxic to dogs. A dog that eats a peanut butter with xylitol needs a vet or poison line right away.
How to serve it
Pick a natural kind and read the whole label for xylitol first. VCA says it can be frozen inside a toy. Keep it to a small amount, since it is high in calories.
Good to know
The peanut butter itself is not the poison problem. The sweetener xylitol that some brands add is, so the label matters more than the jar's front.
Watch for: Some nut butters other than peanut butter also contain xylitol, and a few dogs are allergic to peanut proteins (VCA says fewer than 1 in 100).
Already ate it?
If your pet ate a lot, or you are worried, call your vet. Say what was eaten, how much and when, and have your pet's weight ready.

For the children
"Peanut butter is only a tiny treat for dogs, and only a grown-up decides how much."
A job: Be the label reader. Before a grown-up shares any food with the dog, check this page, and ask a grown-up if the food is not on it.
